The bush, after dark
Out here there isn't a streetlight for a very long way. On a clear night the Milky Way rolls straight over the valley — the bright core, the dust lanes, the Southern Cross, satellites sliding through — no telescope required. Step outside, give your eyes a minute, look up.
And the bush doesn't clock off at dark. Mist sits on the river flats at dawn while 280-odd species of birds argue about sunrise. Platypus work the quiet pools at first and last light. Dusk turns the ranges every colour they own. City nights don't do any of this.
